For most of my career, the end of design was a handoff. A file full of mocks, redlines and notes, passed across to engineering and then reinterpreted.
Something is always lost in that gap. Motion, timing, the small decisions that make an interface feel right: they rarely survive the translation.
What changed
In my org we increasingly hand engineering working front-end code instead of mocks, across mobile, web and the core Windows client. Design writes the first version of the thing, not a picture of it.
A mock is a promise. Code is the thing itself. Designers should own the thing.
Owning the outcome
When design ships code, design owns what reaches the user. That changes the conversation with engineering from approval to collaboration.
